If you are shy and single, it is probably hard for you to carry on a conversation with a member of the opposite sex. Remember that it gets easier with practice.

Conversations when Shy.
By Chris Wilson

In any conversation, certain follow-up procedures are important. It doesn't really matter whether the person is a business acquaintance, a member of the opposite sex, or your mother's friend. Try these pointers for a successful verbal exchange, even if you are shy:

  • Always get the other person's name and always give your name.
  • During the conversation, use the other person's name at least once.
  • Always try to connect with the other person in some common interest or bond. This causes a feeling of rapport.
  • Look the other person in the eye. This doesn't mean stare at the other person. It means moving your eyes within a triangle formed by the width of the forehead at the apex narrowing to the mouth at the bottom of the triangle.
  • Smile, smile, smile, then smile some more.
  • Minimize focus on yourself and keep the conversation on the other person.
  • Be sincere.
  • Be complimentary if the compliment is sincere.
  • Ask open-ended questions that can not be answered with a "yes" or "no" to keep the conversation rolling.
  • Don't mumble.
  • Be enthusiastic and positive.

Shy and single: In all conversations, no matter who talks, certain follow-up procedures apply to talking. If you follow them, you can talk to anyone. Try these conversational pointers to talk successfully with anyone.

No matter how difficult it is for you to carry on a conversation with a member of the opposite sex, remember that it gets easier with practice. In fact, if you will start talking to strangers everywhere--grocery store, car wash, post office, etc., then an attractive member of the opposite sex will become just another person to speak to casually, not a person to approach with apprehension.

Four last tips:

1.  Ease  yourself into any uncomfortable  situation  with  small steps.

2. Time spent daydreaming, rehearsing a situation, or visualizing the  desired  outcome  helps you accomplish  any  task  including talking with the opposite sex when you are shy.

3.  Open-ended  questions, those that can't be  answered  with  a "no," are excellent ways to start talking and keep a conversation viable.  The only question not to try starts with "why." A  "why" question  often  makes  people  defensive  which  defeats your purpose.

4. Merely saying "Hello" works most of the time. If two syllables has you craoking, try "Hi."
