Singles and Marriage
A Reality Check

By Rob McLean

Singles and marriage: About 15%-17% of singles are unattached (no significant other) at one time. Most of these are "looking," although some are not actively looking.

You are standing in line at your local supermarket when you notice a gorgeous person in the vegetable section. You hasten over to pick up the potatoes you suddenly need while he/she is still there.

You strike up a conversation about baked potatoes, go through the check-out line together, continue to Starbucks for coffee, and thus meet the love of your life.

By chance?

Well, not exactly. It would not have happened without your help.

Likely?

Well, how many times have you seen a gorgeous person, alone and minus wedding ring, in the vegetable section? Probably not many.

Here is how likely it is.

About 15% to 17% of singles are unattached (no significant other) at one time. Most of these are "looking," although some are not actively looking. This means they are home with the remote and pizza delivery. They will be hard for you to find.

Approximately 40% of the adult population is single (slightly higher or lower in some areas) which means, if you are lucky, about 6.5% of the population is unattached and potentially available to you. It's really not that high, but we need all the help we can get here.

Assuming 50% is the gender of your preference, you are down to 3.25%.

How about reasonably close to your area of town, like say between ___________ and _____________? We are surely less than 2% by now.

Now what was that age range you wanted? How many women (men) of the population are in that ten-year age range? You would guess 20%, I believe I heard you say. So, 20% of 2%.....

Height? Remember the average woman is around 5'4" tall and the average man is about 5'8".

Education? Race? Religion? Oh, my, we are really slipping here.

Oh, yeah, and willing to go antiquing (flea marketing, rollerblading, fishing, shopping, rock climbing) with you on a regular basis to say nothing of just abide your other unusual hobbies, friends, and relatives.

Don't forget marital and children status, especially if you are one of these unrealistic people who want "never been married," or "no children but ready to have mine," etc.!

And, hey, any chemistry?

All of that is there? That's great. But what about him/her?

You are only 1/2 of this equation.

Are you the right age range, height, education, race, religion, marital status, children status, hobby and interest preference with great chemistry to boot!?!
And then you have to meet each other and have the nerve to speak up on that particular day.

You get the picture. That's why it is a numbers' game!

I doubt if you have time to shop at a supermarket, anyway. With those statistics you need to be out meeting singles not thinking about your stomach.

Now, if you are a woman and want to help your odds a bit, try Fairbanks, Alaska. The ratio of single men to single women is 5-to-3!
