Single parents can enjoy holidays by planning activities with their children.

Enjoy the Holidays with Your Children.

By SOLO staff

Holidays really are for kids. There is no better time to plan activities with your child.

Here are some suggestions, weather and localities suitable, of course:

Other Cultures

Expose children to the holidays of other cultures. The world is shrinking and few of us want our child to be an isolationist. Exposing our children to the cultures of others won't change their religion or cultural heritage. It will broaden their life and their understanding of others.

How do you find this in your area?

First, check local websites, week-end guides, or newspapers for similar activities in your area.

If no local activities exist or if you would like to add to the experience, visit your library for books about other cultural and religious celebrations.

Read the books to your children and reserve some time for discussing these books.

You might prepare a loose-leaf storybook that gives information about the celebrations of others.   Allow  ample space for your own family's cultural and  religious customs.

DFW e-MAG
Breaking a piñata can be a family tradition for all ages. Include the history of the piñata in Mexican celebrations.

Christmas Theater

Back to your local websites, week-end guides, or newspapers for theater activities in your area. If there are none available, consider a day trip to another city.

Outdoor Activities

Outdoor activities are great, too, weather permitting. Try hiking a nature trail in the south or participating in any number of cold-weather activities where the white stuff falls.

Keep Searching and Thinking

As you investigate one activity, others will come to mind for a perfect holiday season.

In addition to activities with your children, it is also nice to have a few that keep children busy while you perform your holiday duties. Check back next week for children's "stand-alone" pastimes and projects.

We would like to hear your ideas for holiday activities, too.
