Single Parents and the single family:  Single  parents can find time to enjoy holiday by planning a few activities to keep their children occupied. Look for projects that are "neat" or you will spend more time cleaning up than you saved by having the kids occupied.

Holidays and kids go together. And it helps singles get through a potentially lonely time if there are kids around.

The holidays can also be a stressful time for parents and kids alike, especially when Mom or Dad is pressed for time.

Have a few projects planned for the times when you are very busy. But think carefully about the ability of the project to help entertain:

  • With little of your attention.
  • With little mess to be cleaned up by you.

For example, an activity such as cookie baking creates a mess. If you have to clean that up, that particular activity was not very helpful timewise.

The good memories are worth some loss of time, of course, but you may not be able to spend every minute of the holiday together.

A few neat projects are:

  • Paper chains with tape: Children love tape. Cut strips of colorful paper and let them tape chains to decorate their room.
  • Drawings: All children are artists at heart. Decorate the refrigerator and your windows with their holiday drawings. Leave them up for a week or two. Then save a few for kids' scrapbooks or to return to them on their 30th birthday.
  • Holiday oranges: Have children press whole cloves into an orange for "good holiday smells."
  • Holiday placemats: Let children draw, color, and decorate 8 1/2" x 14" paper to use as placemats during the holiday season.
  • Recordings: If you have a boom box, acquire a microphone and let children record holiday songs plus their choice of " other stuff" as a cassette for grandma and grandpa.
  • Puzzles: Get a appropriate-aged puzzle with a holiday theme. After the kids have finished it, glue it together and use it as a holiday centerpiece or decoration.
  • Card: Have children make cards for all your relatives and close friends. Not only will the children be occupied, the cards will bring a smile to many faces.
  • Coloring Books: Buy a holiday appropriate coloring book and decorate the house with completed pages from the book.
  • Buy holiday appropriate paper plates and napkins. Ask the children to set the table for a fun holiday meal.
  • If they are old enough, have them prepare the meal. Peanut butter, anyone?
