We all know exercise is important. It makes us feel good, look good, and does wonders for lifelong health. Yet, finding time to exercise is hard for singles, particularly for single parents. Please allow me to make a few suggestions. Exercise by Walking Of course, walk, but where? 1. Park as far from the door as possible everywhere you go and hike in. Over time, that will make a difference. Unless you never go anywhere... 2. Find a safe park near you and walk there regularly. Breathe some fresh air (well, maybe) and enjoy being outdoors. Stop to enjoy nature: Watch a bird or a squirrel. 3. Join a hiking or walking group. If you live in a city, you can probably find a Sierra Club or Volkssport group in your area. There may even be a singles walking group in your town or church. 4. Walk around your neighborhood. You may even get to know some of your neighbors. Exercise by Working Out Finding time to work out is sometimes harder than walking. So, do it at home. In the time it takes you to drive to the gym, get into the gym and wait for a machine or two, you can do a whole routine with the stretch bands. They are cheap and they really do work. You might also consider an exercise ball but that's optional for a home work out--the bands are the best. Exercise with Yoga Building muscle and aerobics are only part of an exercise routine. You need stretching and balance, too. That is where yoga comes in--yes, real men do yoga, too. Many people start with a class but you can also start with a video of some sort. A video is better than a book because you actually get to see the movements. Even 15 minutes of yoga is relaxing and does amazing things to your body and soul over time. Exercise by Dancing Dancing is good exercise--especially swing and C & W. Invest in a good video or take lessons. Or just grab a pillow--put on some fast music--and dance around your living room. Let me repeat: Dancing is good exercise. The kids will love it, too. Try line dancing as a family. Even the littlest one can learn! Exercise by Jumping Rope This is an easy and inexpensive aerobic exercise. Have a jump rope "contest" with your kids in your home or out on the patio. Each of you jumps until you miss. Mom or Dad "recover" while the kids are jumping. |
