Suddenly Single
Dating Again

By Pat McChristie

If you are suddenly single or single again and just beginning to date again or if you are merely confused by the dating scene, this article covers dating matters for all singles. Learn who asks for the date, who pays for the date, first dates, how to say "no" to a date, how to end a date. Other dating matters are covered here. also.

If you have been out of the loop since college or even for many years, it's hard to know how to date again. Here are a few hints!

First Date

The safest rule of thumb for a first date (especially if the first date is a blind date) is two cars, public place, don't leave together.

First dates can be draining, especially if you have not dated in some time. You may even feel you are back in school

In addition, if there is not interest in the other person, a long date can be a boring or even an agonizing period of time.

For that reason, we suggest a short date, no more than one hour. Lunch, an ice cream cone, coffee, etc. make the best first dates.

Who Asks

Either sex! Both men and women are normally flattered to be asked for a date. However, neither sex wants to date everyone who asks. They will usually (but not always) say "no" if they do not wish to date you.

Don't let a few singles who decline your offer discourage you from asking again. It will happen.

Some men have a thicker skin for rejection than women. They usually keep asking although many women give up after a few rejections. Thank goodness for those of us who do keep trying.

How to Decline

Saying "no" to a date is harder for some people than saying "yes." Keep it simple. Tell the truth!

Don't lead someone on by saying you are busy when you aren't or that you will call back when you won't. The truth can be a s simple as "I'm flattered you asked me for a date because you are such a nice (attractive, fun, sincere, etc.) person. However, I'm gong to decline because I don't feel we have much in common."

Who Pays

Rule of thumb: The person who asks for the date pays for the date. Dutch treat is the option of the person who is asked.

What Do I Talk About

Some people have a gift of gab and can talk to anyone, anywhere. For the rest of us, it is wise to have a few things in mind to discuss before the date. It is hard to be creative when you are nervous.

Movies, current events, sports, music make good neutral topics. Politics and religion do not.

Ask questions to draw the other person out. However, do not grill the other person. Grilling makes most people uncomfortable and makes you look socially inept.

Listen at Least as Much as You Talk

If you discuss your job, children or family, pet, ex or past relationships, keep the discussion short. If the other person keeps bringing up the subject, ask him/her to talk about something else.

Do not try to change the opinions of the other person. You will be seen as controlling.

Do not try to solve problems for the other person. You will be seen as controlling.

Above all, though, listen at least as much as you talk. This pacing is particularly important if you do have the gift of gab or if a lull in the conversation makes you crazy.

How to End a Date

State that you would like to get together again. Ask if the other person would like this, too.

OR

State that you enjoyed yourself but feel that you do not have enough in common (of "chemistry") to date again.

OR

Ask for any number of friendship situations from networking to inviting the other person to a party or your favorite social group.

Remember

Not everyone is going to want to date you again. Chemistry, that elusive spark that makes the world go 'round, is not always present for both people. Convince yourself that this is o.k. so your first few rejections won't send you reaching for the TV remote again.

Dating is frustrating at times. However, it is a numbers game. The more people you date, the more choices you will have for your (next) relationship and, equally as important, for friends.
